Artemis Alcalay and Eugenia Alexaki presented the project “Greek Jews Holocaust Survivors” at the online one-day conference “Teaching approaches to World War II memorial sites through art” organized by the Association for History Education in Greece (AHEG) in cooperation with the Cultural Projects Departments of the 1st & 3rd Athens Regional Directorates of Secondary Education, the West Attica Secondary Education Directorate, and the 1st Regional Centre for Educational Planning of Attica, 13.10.2021.

Eugenia Alexaki’s lecture was entitled “Artemis Alcalay’s visual-research project ‘Greek Jewish Holocaust survivors’ in a digital environment: a public (counter)monument of life”. See the presentation here.

The conference was organized on the occasion of the Commemoration Day of the Victory of the Nations against Nazism in World War II, on the anniversary of the surrender of Nazi Germany to the Allied forces (8/9 May 1945). The lectures aimed at presenting alternative approaches and generating discussion on how we can use art as an effective tool to teach about places of memory and the difficult past in the history classroom, in the development and implementation of relevant educational projects, as well as during school visits, either physically or virtually, at WWII memorial sites and monuments.
