On the occasion of the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Holocaust, on 27 January 2023, the Municipality of Athens honoured the day with the symbolic lighting of the City Hall and a double outdoor photo exhibition – a tribute to the Greek Jewish communities.

The outdoor double photo exhibition on Vasilissis Olga Street with the title “Trauma as Memory and Life” featured photographic material from the Archive of the Jewish Museum of Greece as well as photographs of works by Artemis Alcalay. In the works presented Artemis Alcalay explores issues of freedom and memory, loss and trauma, from a visual perspective. Issues of identity, personal and historical memory, trauma, loss and, at the same time, resistance through creating art are addressed. The house, a symbol of security, family warmth and play in times of peace, is shaken and destroyed in times of war. As an idea, reference, refuge and place of memory and experience, it largely defines this series of works. It becomes a tool of recollection, introspection, but also a boundary between inside and outside, of security and the anguish of loss.
