Joint came to our rescue, with bread, milk, everything one wanted…
So one day we were sitting with my father and my mother, somebody came… we were informed that my father, my own dad had to go to Beth Saul, that was the Grand Synagogue Beth Saul because “they want to come and talk to you”. I begged him “please daddy, don’t go, you will get arrested”. “What are you saying, child, that they will arrest us? What are you saying?” “What, are they going to talk to you about?” I said. “ They will arrest you”. I pleaded with him…

And they put us in the train cars [to leave Bergen Belsen]. We got in, we sat and the Germans behind us were watching. I was crying… So, then someone came and said “Those who are Spanish must get off at Portbou”, which is close to France. Portbou is before Paris. You will get off there and you will be released because you have Spanish nationality. Anyway, we were in these train cars and after we arrived, we were patient “we will get down”, anyway, we stopped, there were Germans there as well, carrying things. And Joint was there too, they came to our rescue, with bread, milk, everything one wanted and the Germans were there and they were stealing, stealing the milk, they were stealing everything… What can one do? As soon as we got out of the cars, they took us straight away to the doctor, to see what we had. They examined us, one by one, and fortunately we had no ailments and they took us to hotels in Barcelona.
