Interview conducted in:
Greek

After photographing and talking with Itzhak Ganon in his home, he and his daughter suggested that we all visit his childhood friend Daniel Yohanan in Rishon LeZion. The two friends were photographed together, talked about their childhood in Arta and shared painful memories of Auschwitz.

But G-d let me live

I was born in 1924. We were a family of four: Five brothers, two sisters, mother and father.

They took us from Greece, from the town of Arta on March 25. My father, when the Germans took us, died on the way. He saw nothing. My mother, they burned her, my sister with her two children, my brother’s wife. I suffered a lot in Germany [refers to Auschwitz], I was in the hospital for six and a half months and then they came, they wanted to take me and burn me, but G-d let me live and they brought me back to the hospital and then I was sent to work. We worked on airplanes, on roads.

[…]

What they did to me… They took, they opened me up, they took out this [points to his kidney] and here, I don’t know what they took out from… they cut open all my belly. Mengele, the greatest doctor, Mengele. And there was also some doctor from Thessaloniki. What happened to him, I wonder? He died on the way [refers to a death march].
