“I don’t like it that the people in this neighbourhood have been staring at it, let’s remove it”
What home? It took a long time for us to return home. They were dragging us here and there; finally, we came back. We never found our home. Ιt wasn’t ours, it was rented. We stayed in the Jewish quarter. In an alley next to a creamery, opposite a little shop. We were poor, we weren’t rich.
I met my husband… he came to do some work and… it just happened. He brought his parents then; they didn’t want me, but he said: “I’ll elope with her; I’ll marry her”. He was the only one in his family working back then and giving money to them. And so his parents came to accept me nicely. As soon I got here there was much work to do. My father-in-law also started working; when he didn’t have work, he would dig other people’s fields and also go to Raftopoulos and fix pipes.
When I came out here, my mother-in-law put some sort of herb on the number [on my arm]. She didn’t like it. “I don’t like it that the people in this neighbourhood have been staring at it, let’s remove it”.
She did it with some herb, crushed the herb, mixed it with oil, spread it [on my arm], and gradually it seemed to work a little. It’s much fainter now.
